The genesis of CME can be traced back to the late 1980s when the company's founder, Dick Peitz, recognized the limitations of traditional multizone systems in the increasingly energy-conscious climate. He envisioned a more efficient and cost-effective alternative: a customized rooftop penthouse structure housing multiple, independently controlled HVAC units. This revolutionary concept, dubbed the PMZ unit, was born out of his desire to provide a superior solution for commercial building HVAC needs.

In 1988, the first PMZ unit was successfully installed on a school roof, marking a turning point in the industry. This pioneering venture paved the way for the formation of Custom Mechanical Equipment in 1999, aimed at providing a wider array of tailored HVAC solutions.
